Would you still call me a diva if I were a man?" asked Zaha Hadid, challenging as she did so, more than 100 years of stereotypes about female architects. A century in which women were refused entry to architecture schools, were denied degrees when they had completed courses, a century in which even now, women occupy just ten per cent of the highest-ranking jobs in architecture firms. In contrast, Breaking Ground is a pioneering, even essential, celebration of incredible architecture designed by women. Featuring more than 150 architects and buildings, and spanning the last 100 years, Breaking Ground is both a glorious visual manifesto and a timely record of the extraordinary contribution female architects have made to the profession.

For the last twenty years gender equality has been on the agenda of national higher education policies both within Europe and beyond it. Previous research in this area has produced numerous case studies about programmes at institutions of higher education as well as reports about national policies. Building on this material, the authors of this book analyse under which circumstances equality programmes are successful. In order to develop a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of and barriers to gender equality in higher education this book presents comparative studies and research focusing on the development of gender equality policies in different countries, as well as studies on the conditions for implementing policies, changes in strategies and the evaluation of gender equality programmes.

This is not a traditional book about the family. In a very essential way, it is a book about being a woman in relation to the current form of the family under capitalism in North America. The authors are three women whose interest in the family stems out of their own unique and varied experiences. The text is comprised of three autoethnographies that look at the family from radically distinct perspectives. Each section is rooted in the author’s own personal and professional life experience. The book explores multi-cultural family therapy, living inside a divorcing family, the role of child protective services, issues of class and race in a family’s identity, how media and pop psychology shape our view of the family, and what it is to be female in a patriarchal family system. All three women are currently working with young people in various capacities. Each section offers new ways to work together with young people to reshape the family so that it better serves those who live within it.

This book is mainly concerned with economic analysis of the labour market status of NESB (Non-English Speaking Background) migrant women in Australia. Newly developed and sophisticated econometric methods are used to analyse the labour market status of both NESB migrant and Australian born women. It shows that NESB migrant women are over represented in occupations that have low pay and poor working conditions. It also shows that they are disadvantaged (and discriminated against) in the Australian labour market due to poor English, non-recognition of overseas qualifications and their late arrival. Our analysis provides many new results, which were not observed previously. This book sheds light on why labour market outcomes appear to be unequal, and what policy measures might be undertaken to reduce the imbalance. Some of the techniques presented here can also be used in a wide range of policy areas in many other countries. Economists, policy and business analysts and market researchers will find this book very useful.

The scientific study of sexual identity has made great strides in the five decades since Kinsey’s early investigations.; We know that sexual orientation exists on a continuum and not within a list of static categories such as "straight" and "gay", yet it’s not always clear what should be measured, or what should "count." It’s understood that sexual orientation is an intricate blend of sexual attraction, behavior, and identity, but it can also be informed by political identity, social behavior, and nuances of attraction that may possibly transcend sex. However one defines sexuality, Contemporary Perspectives on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identities relates these concepts to larger societal issues while also highlighting critical grey areas in the knowledge base, from the psychobiology of desire to the fluidity of adolescent sexual experience and self-expression. Well-known scholars in the psychology of sexual orientation: Explore the challenges of answering the basic question "How many gays are there?" when scholars, statisticians, and research participants widely disagree. Set out a cogent framework for understanding the degrees of sexual prejudice and stigma, motivation for hate crimes, and their effects on sexual minorities. Review the state of research on same-sex relationships as a work in progress. Report on the evolving legal status of gays and lesbians, as more same-sex couples consider adoption and lobby to change the marriage laws. Present current findings on children raised in same-sex households, from behavioral health to social relationships Raise the pertinent question—given the disparities between men and women in terms of sexual expression and arousal—"What is sexual orientation, and how do we view it through the lens of gender Contemporary Perspectives on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identities is especially timely during this current crossroads of social and political acceptance, and is thought-provoking, influential reading for researchers, practitioners working with sexual minorities, and policymakers. About the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation The Nebraska Symposium on Motivation has been sponsored by the Department of Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1953. Each year the Symposium invites leading scholars from around the world to speak at a conference devoted to a topic of current interest to psychology, the proceedings of which are published in an edited volume.
